Otherlab is an independent research and development lab. It pairs creativity with engineering rigor to develop new answers for deep decarbonization, then works on the practical problem of getting them out of the lab and into everyday use.
Lightfoot is one of those answers. It was not designed to fit an existing category. It exists because the short trips that shape our days deserved a better starting question.
How much vehicle, and how much energy, does a short trip need?
The coffee run, the school pickup, the groceries on the way home. These trips matter, even when they don’t take us very far. We thought they deserved a vehicle designed around them.
Starting there changes what you build.
Proportion over overkill
Build enough vehicle for the trips people actually take. Put safety and durability into the design from the start, and leave out what those trips don’t need.
Readiness over ritual
Time spent parked can be useful too. In sunlight, Lightfoot adds range while you’re doing something else, helping you go longer between plug-ins.
Life over category
We designed around an ordinary day, not an existing vehicle classification. A passenger, groceries and a change of plans, in one object that we actually wanted to use.
Use less. Get more.
Less machinery and less friction between you and the life outside your door. More freedom to go, carry, stop by and change your mind.
